Ensuring that the proper method is applied is very important for the functionality and durability of your custom exhaust system. We offer professional tube bending services for custom cars or motorcycles and carry a large die inventory that allows us to make the bends you need.

Methods to Bend Stainless Steel Exhaust

Although there are many methods of pipe or tube bending. When it comes to custom exhaust pipes, two of the most common and successful methods are:

  • Compression Bending- Typically used in less critical exhaust systems in which there is not a high-pressure flow. For lower-quality materials or thinner tubing, compression bending is not recommended. Issues such as collapsing or flatting
  • on the outside of the bend can occur, or wrinkling on the inside of the bend may occur. For a successful compression bend on a custom exhaust system, having a minimum stainless steel tubing thickness of 14 gauge is critical.
  • Mandrel Bending- During the mandrel bending process for the exhaust system there are 3 types of mandrels used to create a successful mandrel bend.
    • Plug mandrel
    • Standard open pitch mandrel
    • Closed pitch mandrel (thin wall mandrel)

How to bend stainless steel exhaust pipe

Before stainless steel pipe bending occurs, there are many things we must take into consideration to provide the smoothest and most functional exhaust system or tailpipe.  Knowing the outside diameter, centerline radius, wall thickness, tube elongation, as well as bend angle, all need to be taken into account. This will ensure we properly bend stainless steel for a custom exhaust system.
